Federal health officials say a network they set up

first_imgFederal health officials say a network they set up last year to identify deadly “nightmare bacteria” is helping control these germs, but the system would be more effective if more hospitals and doctors participated.A new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention focuses on particularly odious germs that live primarily in the gut and cannot be killed with “antibiotics of last resort,” called carbapenems.CDC Deputy Director Dr. Anne Schuchat calls them “nightmare bacteria” because “they are virtually untreatable.” As many as half of patients with these infections die, she says. These bacteria are known as “enterobacteriaceae,” and can include E. coli, Klebsiella, and Enterobacter. They can cause urinary tract infections and sepsis. They normally respond to antibiotics unless they have taken up a trait that causes drug resistance. The CDC identified more than 1,400 people who tested positive for these kinds of germs last year, including 221 who harbored newer, rare variants that have not yet spread across the country. They are most often found in people who have spent time in nursing homes and hospitals. One form of resistance, known as KPC, has already spread widely throughout the U.S. since it was first isolated in North Carolina back in 2001. But the CDC is trying to prevent four other strains, which have cropped up in isolated pockets, from taking hold.As part of that effort, in January 2017 the CDC established a nationwide network of labs to make it easier and faster to identify these killer bacteria. The CDC now reports that the first nine months of that effort were successful, though they turned up more of these rare germs than Schuchat expected.”These rare resistance patterns were widespread,” she tells NPR. “Basically no age, race or gender was spared.”But detecting these rare germs also presents an opportunity. Once a case is detected, the CDC, along with state and local health officials, can swoop in and reduce the chance that these germs will spread. Infection control measures in nursing homes and hospitals can be ramped up. Medical personnel and family members who have been in close contact with these patients can be tested rapidly to see if they are also carrying the dangerous bacteria.”Because of the additional testing capacity that we have, we have found a lot of these scary bacteria around the country but we’ve found them in ones and twos and not everywhere,” Schuchat says. “So there’s a chance to keep them from becoming widespread.”That effort appears to be working. The percentage of bacteria carrying these potentially deadly drug-resistance features is on the decline, according to the CDC’s new “Vital Signs” report in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. The CDC is publicizing these efforts in order to encourage more doctors and hospitals to send their samples along to state testing labs or one of the seven labs that the CDC has established to run these samples quickly. And, despite gains in the United States, the problem is growing rapidly worse elsewhere in the world. The use – and misuse – of antibiotics is increasing quickly, especially in countries without the latest medical care.”We have to be doing this not only in the U.S. but across the world because this problem is definitely worldwide,” says Dr. Jason Newland, a pediatrician at Washington University in St. Louis and a spokesman for the Infectious Diseases Society of America.Indeed, at least some of the cases the CDC identified were among people who had surgery overseas and got ill once they returned home.”So if you have had a healthcare procedure outside the country, you should tell your doctor that, if you’re sick,” Schuchat advises. Purdue researchers develop new chemical process to find better drug fits for

(Editor)Oct 16 2018When a medication doesn’t “fit” the body quite right, the results can be devastating. Such is the case for thalidomide, which was prescribed in the 1950s and 1960s as a sedative or hypnotic, even for pregnant women.Although one version of thalidomide, referred to as the left-handed form, is a powerful tranquilizer, it was tragically discovered that the other form can disrupt fetal development. This resulted in horrific birth defects in more than 10,000 children around the world. For efficacy and safety, the bioactive drug molecules have to be as pure as possible, containing a single pure enantiomer. A pair of molecules that are mirror images of each other is called enantiomers.Related StoriesResearch reveals genetic cause of deadly digestive disease in childrenRevolutionary gene replacement surgery restores vision in patients with retinal degenerationNew network for children and youth with special health care needs seeks to improve systems of carePurdue University researchers, including chemistry professor and Nobel Prize winner Ei-ichi Negishi, have developed technology to create a new chemical process to synthesize drug-like molecules with ultra-high purity. The technology is featured in the latest edition of Angewandte Chemie.Their technology aligns with Purdue’s Giant Leaps celebration, acknowledging the university’s global advancements made in health as part of Purdue’s 150th anniversary. This is one of the four themes of the yearlong celebration’s Ideas Festival, designed to showcase Purdue as an intellectual center solving real-world issues.Purdue’s team is focused on α-Amino boronic acids and derivatives, which are key pharmacophores in a variety of FDA-approved drugs used for treating cancer, diabetes and other diseases and illnesses. They created what they believe to be the first general and highly efficient method for the synthesis of a variety of α-Amino tertiary boronic acids and esters in their enantiopure forms as a single pure enantiomer, both of which are crucial types of compounds for drug discovery research.”Our work is important because the response of an organism to a particular molecule like a drug often depends on how that molecule fits a particular site on a receptor molecule in the organism, similar to how a left-handed person requires a left-handed glove,” said Shiqing Xu, a member of the research team.Purdue’s technology comes at a time when, despite recent advances in chemistry, this kind of synthesis is a challenge for organic chemists, which has largely prevented its implementation in drug discovery. The new chemical process has a broad scope for use among boron-based drugs and produces high yields. The technology is patented through the Purdue Office of Technology Commercialization and is available for licensing.last_img read more

Antivaccination activists are misusing new scientific breakthroughs on beneficial microbes

(Editor)Mar 8 2019Anti-vaccination activists are capitalizing on radical new scientific insights into the beneficial effects of microbes in the human body, according to new research from the London School of Economics and Political Science. The genomic sciences, which use information from DNA to develop new ways to treat, cure, or prevent the thousands of diseases, are “driving a transformation in our understanding of microbes and human health as it not only shows that microbes can be good for us but that they are an integral part of the human body”, according to Dr Stephan Guttinger, Research Associate at LSE’s Centre for Philosophy of Natural and Social Science.Dr Guttinger, who has studied the so-called “anti-vaxxers'” online propaganda on websites and blogs, found that they are arguing that this research provides more evidence that vaccines are unnecessary and are interfering in the body’s natural immune system. He quotes a typical article from an anti-vaxxer website which uses scientific research which showed the beneficial effects of the norovirus in mice to say “vaccinations may deprive the body of favourable immune-modulating effects of some viral infections”.Dr Guttinger, who has a background in biochemistry, explains that they are twisting the facts of these scientific breakthroughs to further their cause: “Polio, diphtheria, measles or viral encephalitis have no positive immune-modulating effects on the human body, and no scientist claims that these microbes might be good for health. Hence, vaccines against them will protect the human body and not deprive it of beneficial agents.”Facebook and Amazon have recently attracted criticism from health experts and politicians for enabling the spread of propaganda and providing fund-raising platforms for anti-vaccination groups. Many are operating on Facebook in closed groups, where members have to be approved in advance. By barring access to others, they are able to serve undiluted misinformation without challenge while advocating unfounded alternative treatments such as high doses of vitamin C.Related StoriesPatients with HIV DNA in cerebrospinal fluid have high risk of experiencing cognitive deficitsResearch sheds light on sun-induced DNA damage and repairOlympus Europe and Cytosurge join hands to accelerate drug development, single cell researchDr Guttinger’s paper concludes: “There are many more examples where new findings from microbiome research are used by anti-vaccination activists to question the need for and safety of vaccination efforts. It is clear that the overall conclusions of these articles are not supported by current research. But the crucial point is probably not so much whether these arguments can withstand fact-checking and evidence. What matters is the way in which they play on and misuse recent developments in the life sciences to attack public health policies and the very idea of vaccination itself.”He calls for a more concerted effort by scientists and public health experts to tackle misinformation from anti-vaxxers: “To counter the propaganda by anti-vaccine activists, the research and public health communities have to adjust their communication. Arguing that vaccines are safe and the most efficient public health intervention to combat infectious diseases is no longer just a question of providing more data on the safety of specific vaccines. It has to expand to discuss a broader view of human biology, the body’s microbiomes and their role in health and disease to reassert that while not all bugs are bad, some are and vaccines help to protect us against these.”Dr Guttinger’s paper, The anti-vaccination debate and the microbiome. How paradigm shifts in the life sciences create new challenges for the vaccination debate is published in the latest edition of European Molecular Biology Organization reports and was funded by the European Research Council.last_img read more

FRAX tool useful in breast cancer patients treated with aromatase inhibitors

first_imgReviewed by James Ives, M.Psych. (Editor)May 9 2019The FRAX® tool takes into account certain factors to determine the risk of bone fracture in the general population. In a Journal of Bone and Mineral Research study, the tool was effective at determining fracture risk for women with breast cancer who were treated with aromatase inhibitors, which cause accelerated bone loss, when combined with bone mineral density measurements. However, the results also question the practice of considering aromatase inhibitors a “secondary cause of osteoporosis” when the FRAX® tool is used without bone mineral density, because this can lead to overestimation of fracture risk. Nonetheless, it is very important to determine fracture risk in women receiving aromatase inhibitor therapy who will most likely experience bone loss during treatment.”We hope that our data will help to inform clinical guidelines regarding fracture risk assessment in women with breast cancer, and the incorporation of FRAX® in management algorithms of those receiving aromatase inhibitors,” said lead author Dr. William D. Leslie, of the University of Manitoba, in Canada.Source: https://newsroom.wiley.com/press-release/journal-bone-and-mineral-research/fracture-risk-tool-useful-women-breast-cancer-initialast_img read more
