Tsetsi steps into the ring

first_imgTsetsi Davis, one of the crowd favourites over the years in the Wray & Nephew Contender boxing series, makes his debut tonight against American Courtney McLeave at the Chinese Benevolent Association auditorium.Davis has been able to fight as both a welterweight and a middleweight in the competition and has actually been a finalist. At age 38, he now has what is regarded as his last chance to take the top prize of $2 million this year and has said repeatedly since being selected that he believes that this will be his time to shine. He enters the ring with a record of 14 victories and five losses, while his American opponent McLeave, is a 21-year old boxer who has been a professional for a year, and has a one-win and two-loss record. Based on these figures, Davis goes into the fight with a huge advantage as he has much more experience than his opponent.SEEDING METHODThe method of determining the fights in the preliminary round this year is by a draw. Previously, there were challenges in which two teams competed and a boxer from the winning team was allowed to select his opponent. This year, the boxers on both teams were seeded and the top four seeds draw an opponent from the bottom four of the opposing team.By this method, unless there is an upset, the better boxers go on to the quarter-finals and challenge each other for the semi-final and then final spots. The runner-up in the competition takes home $500,000, while third gets $250,000 and fourth $200,000.The first week of competition saw that fight end in only 55 seconds after the young American, Xzaviar Ford, tore a tendon in his right shoulder and could not continue to fight. There was great disappointment in the auditorium after this premature end.Last week, spectators saw a much better fight as highly rated Demarcos Corley defeated Iwan Azore from Guyana on points, by using his superior boxing skills and ring savvy to good advantage.McLeave’s camp is confident that their fighter can hold his own against the more experienced Davis, while the Davis camp is quietly confident.”We have seen his record and will be going into the fight confident of victory, but we are not taking anything for granted. We want a win and that is what we are going for. We just have to wait to see what he brings to the table,” a representative from their camp said.Jamaica at 9:30 p.m.last_img read more

Frustrated Golovkin struggling to book Canelo replacement

first_imgFILE – In this Sept. 17, 2017 file photo shows Gennady Golovkin, left, connects with a left to Canelo Alvarez during a middleweight title fight in Las Vegas. Golovkin is growing frustrated with boxing’s sanctioning bodies while he struggles to find a replacement opponent for Canelo Alvarez on May 5. The unbeaten middleweight champion’s rematch with Alvarez in Las Vegas fell through after the Mexican star failed a doping test in February and finally withdrew from the bout last week.(AP Photo/John Locher, File)LOS ANGELES — Gennady Golovkin is growing frustrated with boxing’s sanctioning bodies while he struggles to find a replacement opponent for Canelo Alvarez on May 5.Golovkin and his promoter and trainer appeared in downtown Los Angeles on Thursday to announce they still haven’t found a suitable replacement, and time is running out.ADVERTISEMENT “At some point, we’re going to run out of time,” Loeffler said. “Right now, it’s three weeks from Saturday. The arenas are all still working with us. The networks are working with us. … Unfortunately, when you have fights like this that fall out, not everything is under our control. We’re under the gun now just to save May 5.”Loeffler said he has worked extensively to reach a deal with a new opponent while still keeping happy all three sanctioning bodies behind Golovkin’s middleweight belts — a nearly impossible chore in the fractious world of prizefighting.Although Loeffler repeatedly declined to go into extensive details about the obstacles in place, Golovkin is determined to avoid being stripped of any titles by the sanctioning bodies.Unlike Floyd Mayweather and other champions who view title belts as relatively unimportant, Golovkin prizes his reign as a decorated champion after he fought in Europe for years without attention or title belts. After concluding his lucrative business with Alvarez, Golovkin’s ultimate dream is to fight Britain’s Billy Joe Saunders for the WBO middleweight title, the only one he doesn’t hold among the four major sanctioning bodies. With that mandate from his champion, Loeffler is having trouble reconciling the desires of the IBF, WBA and WBC in finding a replacement for Alvarez. The IBF is particularly strident in its opposition to any opponent except mandatory challenger Sergiy Derevyanchenko.ADVERTISEMENT Carpio hits red carpet treatment for China Coast Guard PLAY LIST 02:14Carpio hits red carpet treatment for China Coast Guard02:56NCRPO pledges to donate P3.5 million to victims of Taal eruption00:56Heavy rain brings some relief in Australia02:37Calm moments allow Taal folks some respite03:23Negosyo sa Tagaytay City, bagsak sa pag-aalboroto ng Bulkang Taal01:13Christian Standhardinger wins PBA Best Player award Truck driver killed in Davao del Sur road accident LATEST STORIES MOST READ Jo Koy draws ire for cutting through Cebu City traffic with ‘wang-wang’ Don’t miss out on the latest news and information. Niño feast Woods files entry to play US Open for 1st time since 2015 Jiro Manio arrested for stabbing man in Marikina While Golovkin would be willing to fight the little-known Ukrainian contender, Loeffler believes the matchup would be much less lucrative than other potential matchups.“If we had enough time, we could promote that bout,” Loeffler said. “It would be much more difficult in a short period of time like we have right now.”Irish contender Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan, Jermell Charlo and former U.S. Olympian Vanes Martirosyan all have been discussed for the bout. Martirosyan seems to be the most likely candidate, with the boxers probably fighting in the famed outdoor ring in Carson, California, but Loeffler hasn’t closed the deal.“I’m a little disappointed because there’s no opponent,” said Golovkin’s trainer, Abel Sanchez. “We’re on schedule for our May 5 fight. … I think the fans are clamoring just to see him fight somebody. Hopefully none of the people and the organizations trying to get in the way are going to be able to.”While Golovkin wants to keep busy, he also has his eyes on the future. If Canelo’s potential suspension is only a six-month ban after his meeting with the Nevada Athletic Commission on April 18, Golovkin and Alvarez probably could meet in September near Mexico’s Independence Day, another traditionally big weekend for boxing.“This is one of the longest layoffs of his career,” Loeffler said of Golovkin. “We think it’s patently unfair that he doesn’t fight just because Canelo is suspended.”Sports Related Videospowered by AdSparcRead Next P16.5-M worth of aid provided for Taal Volcano eruption victims — NDRRMC “I’m hungry,” said Golovkin, who turned 36 years old last Sunday. “Just give me a fight.”The unbeaten middleweight champion’s rematch with Alvarez in Las Vegas fell through after the Mexican star failed a doping test in February and finally withdrew from the bout last week.FEATURED STORIESSPORTSGinebra beats Meralco again to capture PBA Governors’ Cup titleSPORTSAfter winning title, time for LA Tenorio to give back to Batangas folkSPORTSTim Cone, Ginebra set their sights on elusive All-Filipino crownGolovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs) is still in training for a fight on Cinco de Mayo weekend, but he doesn’t appear to be much closer to finding a suitable opponent for what would be his 20th defense of his 160-pound titles.Promoter Tom Loeffler believes he must finalize a deal by “the middle of next week” to stage a bout on a traditionally huge date for boxing. GB Port Authority given new milestones with extension of concessions

Hon. Perry Christie outlines what the PLP Administration wants to see in an extended Hawksbill Creek Agreement.PM Christie told the House of Assembly that he will give the Grand Bahama Port Authority an extension to its concessions as the managers of Freeport, but that it is hinged on a number of factors, including that within one year the company has to find an international investor, who can purchase majority ownership of the GBPA so that they can meet their developer commitments. The GB Development Company, also known as DEVCO has to submit a master plan for the island in six months and now the Central Government says it wants a seat at the boardroom table and the Bahamas government wants to have the right to appeal GBPA decisions. The country’s leader also wants to see the GBPA less involved in regulatory roles in Freeport; calling on them to no longer be involved in determining electricity policies and airport charges and fees, for example. PM Christie wants greater transparency, stronger relations with the GBPA and better incentives for inward investment. He said, and I quote: “It is for me to observe that it is now sixty years since the HCA and its enabling legislation came into being. The world and The Bahamas have changed a lot since then, and so have competition and international best practices. No longer can an entity like GBPA be licensor and licensee, regulator and investor with no rights of appeal by licensees, without inherent conflicts and varying levels of dissatisfaction.”The Bahamas Government is proposing an extension of the Hawksbill Creek Agreement with reviews at five year intervals; you can get details of this review process at: www.hcareview.org.last_img read more

first_imgFor a magazine that adamantly claims to not in fact be losing money, OK! magazine unquestionably has had a significant amount of turnover among its editors. The most recent move: Mark Pasetsky is being replaced as top editor by Richard Spencer, the former editor-in-chief of Bauer’s In Touch Weekly. In a statement announcing the staffing change, Spencer says his goal at OK! will be “to enhance content, create sales growth and continuously exceed the expectations of our readers.” Paul Ashford, group editorial director at U.K.-based OK! owner Northern & Shell, says Spencer “clearly brings the kind of experience that can build on the progress we’ve made in our first five years and push our editorial product to the next level.”Prior to In Touch, Spencer served as editor-in-chief of Twist and helped create/served as editor-in-chief of J-14. Spencer stepped down from his post at In Touch this summer. For now, Pasetsky is maintaining his previous position of managing editor, reporting to Spencer. However, a source tells FOLIO: that while OK! management wants Pasetsky to stay, discussions surrounding his role at the magazine are still ongoing. Before joining OK! last fall, Pasetsky served as editor of Life & Style, also a Bauer title.last_img read more

first_imgWILMINGTON, MA — Osram, a global high-tech lighting company, and Boston Children’s Hospital, a worldwide leader in pediatric care, held their Shine Your Light for Boston Children’s Hospital event yesterday evening, when more than 50 buildings around the City of Boston shined Boston Children’s blue to show their support for Boston Children’s patients and their families. Osram is the corporate sponsor of the Shine Your Light campaign. The Marriott Vacation Club Pulse at Custom House, which hosted an event for Boston Children’s, Osram and other sponsor families, was illuminated for the event with a temporary installation of Osram’s Traxon fixtures, Quattro Washer and Quattro Liner, in the famous clock tower observatory.“Two years ago, Boston Children’s Hospital came to us with an idea,” said Michael Flieger, Chief Financial Officer for Osram’s Americas Region. “They hoped to expand their new employee giving campaign and wanted a corporate partner to help them. As a global lighting technology leader that uses light to improve quality of life, including health and wellbeing, we knew it was a great opportunity to help one of our neighbors, which is also the number one children’s hospital in the country.”Osram provided a $250,000 gift and support for the Shine Your Light for Boston Children’s Hospital, ignited by Osram event on Feb. 25. For the second year, the event included a patient story, featuring a family member of an Osram employee who had been successfully treated at Boston Children’s Hospital. In addition, Osram employees coordinated donation drives to support the hospital’s patients and families, organized volunteer teams for the annual Mix 104.1 Cares for Kids Radiothon, and participated in other volunteer activities at the hospital. The funds provided by Osram support the Every Child Fund, which provides financial assistance to families for expenses not covered by insurance; supportive services; research; and opportunities for patients to have a little fun while in the hospital – allowing kids to be kids.“Boston Children’s Hospital is grateful for the ongoing support of Osram,” said Michael Bornhorst, Associate Vice President of Boston Children’s Hospital Trust. “Their partnership provides vital funding that fuels our life-changing mission to help kids in Boston and kids across the world.”This year, Boston Children’s Hospital also secured support from additional sponsors, including Speedway, which sold Shine Your Light keychain flashlights at its stores throughout Massachusetts and New Hampshire, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the hospital.About Boston Children’s HospitalBoston Children’s Hospital, the primary pediatric teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, is home to the world’s largest research enterprise based at a pediatric medical center.
