As of 9:15 p.m. Sunday, Sheriff’s Lt. Carrie Stuart of the Altadena station said officials from the state Department of Fish and Game were still trying to detain the animal. Sheriff’s Sgt. Ron Blankenbaker, who was at the scene, said the bear was about 2 years old and weighed roughly 200 pounds. Stuart said the incident began at 12:55 p.m., when a resident in the 1800 block of Coolidge Avenue called police to say there was a bear in the backyard. When police arrived, the bear ran away and climbed to the top of a tree at a home in the 1800 block of Midlothian Drive. It stayed there for a couple of hours, eventually falling asleep, Stuart said.
